The City of Temecula is honoring Slow Food Temecula Valley with a proclamation for their School Garden program. Proclamation was accepted by the President of Slow Food Temecula Valley, Leah Di Bernardo (local Business Owner and celebrated Chef). The ceremony took place January 24th at 6 PM with well known food activist Alice Waters attending by live feed to the City Council Chambers. Recognized nationally as a leading advocate for organic foods and healthy diets Ms. Waters has authored several books on food and cooking and established the Edible Schoolyard at the Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley, California.

Over 20 local schools are currently participating in the School Gardens program where volunteers provide manpower to create gardens with organic edible plants. The purpose is to teach children to grow, prepare and eat their own foods in a healthy and an environmentally sustainable manner.

Slow Food Temecula Valley provides support and academic resources for agricultural education through the creation of edible, organic gardens at our local schools. The Temecula Slow Food “convivium” provides manpower to start gardens, works with educators and local farmers to create garden curriculum, assists in grant writing and raises funds to keep the gardens growing.
